Meet Heather Coopersmith of Makeup The Bride

Photographer @deborahhanock

In the world of makeup artistry, Heather Coopersmith, owner of Makeup the Bride, stands apart.

She doesn’t just apply makeup, she works magic to enhance natural beauty and boost confidence. Oh, and she cracks jokes and tells stories along the way, so sitting in her chair is a blast. If you agree with us that it actually makes *perfect sense* that a top tier makeup artist also has a degree in Psychology, read on. With two decades of experience, Heather's journey into the world of makeup is as unique as the faces she has painted.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in the makeup industry?

I graduated with a BA in Psychology, but knew I really wanted to do something creative instead. Probably a familiar story for many! I went to makeup school after college and then had a fork in the road career opportunity. I chose a job in makeup artistry for the entertainment industry. I started out in film, moved into headshots, and then beauty. Later, I found my way into weddings and social occasions. Here I am, still passionate and loving my job after 20 years. Yikes, that is crazy to think about!

What types of makeup services do you specialize in?

Nowadays, I specialize in weddings, milestone events like Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, along with editorial and lifestyle beauty work. If you put a face in front of me, I am painting it!

How do you collaborate with clients to understand their preferences and create a personalized look for their special occasion?

I pride myself on customizing every makeup experience for my clients. Makeup is such a personal and subjective enterprise. I want to make the client happy while looking and feeling great. Listening is such a valuable tool. I never go into an appointment with a client and say, “It's my way or no way.” I have preliminary conversations about what my client’s wishes are. Ahead of their event, I always ask for reference photos and images of makeup looks that they gravitate towards. This way we have a mutual understanding of expectations. Then, when we meet in person it's just an enjoyable and fun time.

What's your philosophy when it comes to enhancing a client's beauty?

I strive to enhance natural features and let my client’s individuality shine through. I want the client to feel comfortable to express themselves, and feel confident knowing that I will make thoughtful choices based on age, skin type and personal style. I remind them that this is makeup, not brain surgery, so please don't be shy. Tell me if you would like any changes! For my bridal clients, my motto is "Your Beauty. Your Way. Your Wedding Day."

Do you have any signature styles or techniques that you often incorporate into your work?

My makeup style is "Natural Glam” or “Soft Glam.” I believe in creating an enhanced version of oneself. One of my signature makeup moves is to line the lower water line with a complimentary shade to the eye color to help define it. Love doing that, especially for weddings!

What steps do you take to ensure the makeup you apply is long-lasting?

To make makeup last, I take many things into consideration. Not only skin type and skin texture, but also what type of makeup will be applied. What will the environment or weather be once they are makeup ready? What will be their touch up capacity during the event? I use light layers and setting powders and have sprays at the ready.
